Stephen, one of our residents in our Eastbourne and Hailsham residential homes for adults with autism and learning disabilities has taken up a new hobby – photography.

We couldn’t be happier, as not only is he getting very adept at taking photos, he’s also having so much fun.

Express yourself…

Photography is a great way to express yourself and to explore the world around you and it offers Stephen the opportunity to show us the world he sees.

He takes photos whenever and wherever he wants to… and of whatever he wants to. As you can see, he’s already been busy, he’s taken some photos of his favourite letter – H.

Strike a pose…

Stephen also wanted to include photos of his support team, so he can look back on happy times together in his scrapbook.

His book also captures memories of activities Stephen’s enjoyed, from baking and his cardboard creations to making pottery, as well as places he’s visited – whether bowling, going to the cinema, or riding at Wheels for All…

His instant camera has its own in-built printer, giving him the independence to control the images he wants to print. He then adds them to his scrapbook.

Compiling a book of memories is beneficial on many levels, as it involves laying out the images, lining them up and sticking them in – all of which help develop Stephen’s fine motor skills.

Photography is also a great way of developing practical skills, from learning how to use a camera and its different settings to organising, selecting and printing the photos. It involves concentration and although you might not realise it, making decisions about colours, angles and composition…

  • What are you going to photograph?
  • How? What angle? Close-up? Far away?
  • Selfie? Ask someone to take a photo?

And the best thing?.. Stephen can learn at his own pace – we can’t wait to see where his hobby takes him, and we’ll make sure we post more of his shots!
