Well… April took us by surprise! After a sunny March, we’d thought we’d be in for some April showers, but no! This gave our residents plenty of chances to get out and enjoy the sunniest April since records began!
Walks
As we’ve said before, a walk can be enough to change the dynamics of a resident’s day. Getting out in the open air and walking not only provides physical benefits but also supports our residents’ mental well-being.

It could be a stroll to the shops, to the library or to one of the many parks around us – always a favourite!

By the Sea
Equally high on the list of favourites, is a trip to the seaside, and as the weather has been so good, Matthew and Harry couldn’t wait to visit Eastbourne.
Matthew had a fabulous time riding his tricycle along the front in the sunshine,

Eats and Fun!
We’ve talked before about the difficulties adults with autism face when eating out – the noise of the restaurants, the lighting, layout, number of people… and that’s before you get to the eating and drinking itself and the challenges that presents. The unfamiliar textures and flavours… things might have the same name, but they can look and taste totally different – it can take some getting used to.
That’s why we take a person-centred approach, guided by the specific needs of each resident, and give ongoing support as they familiarise themselves with their ‘new’ environment. We make regular visits to provide reassurance, and to promote a sense of security and a feeling of ease.
Each resident has their ‘go-to’ place – for Adam, that’s Subway and a decaf latte (read all about his trips in our February blog) and for Sam, it’s Windmill Café in Eastbourne and either a latte or hot chocolate!

Don’t think our trips are just about food and drink though… Our residents keep us busy with their wide range of activities 😊
Harry went to the cinema with Paige – he couldn’t wait to see the live-action version of Snow White.

Meanwhile, Matthew was at Freedom Leisure, bowling.
Bowling allows individuals to play alongside others, to be part of a team and to learn patience and to take it in turns. It also involves repetitive actions, which provide comfort and predictability… and then there’s the added bonus of seeing the pins fall down!
Bowling is relatively easy to do, so anyone, regardless of abilities can take part. The rink has a ramp to guide the ball and help with the weight, as well as bumpers to keep the ball on track, which is much more satisfying for our residents as they get used to the game. Our main priority though is that it’s fun – and it’s an activity that Matthew enjoys – he’s not alone, Ellie and Sam also love a game!

Stephen has also had a busy April; he’s been shopping for new clothes with Vivian. He wore some of his haul when visiting his mum Kim on a sunny Mother’s Day 😊

Good times at home…
The good times kept coming this month, with fun happening at home, both inside and out. 😊
We’re very fortunate at Jemini to have both the space and facilities to offer our residents enriching, fulfilling experiences. Whether it’s cooking, crafting, enjoying a foot spa, using the treadmill, or soaking up the sun in the garden. Whatever they choose, we’re here to support them in living life to the fullest.

#CelebratingSocialCare
April was #CelebratingSocialCare month – the perfect time to give a big ‘shout-out’ to all the incredible people working in social care – you can read all about this celebration and our fantastic team, but for now, see for yourself the fun and love we share at Jemini – what a way to end our look at April. 😊
